Belgium include Kompany for World Cup squad, but Benteke gets the drop04/06/2018 09:01
Belgium coach Roberto Martinez has included Kompany in the World Cup squad, despite his injury problems. The Manchester City defender suffered a groin injury on Saturday in Belgium’s friendly against Portugal.
There was uncertainty regarding Kompany’s participation in the World Cup. Primarily because the FIFA deadline for finalizing the squads for participating players is the 4th of June.
While Vincent Kompany is included on the final roster for Belgium his appearance in the tournament is still in doubt. Belgium coach Martinez stated he will wait until the last moment whether to replace Kompany with Laurent Ciman. Meanwhile Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke got dropped from participation, a decision Martinez said was one of his toughest ever.
“The situation is clear, we will try to respect the rules”, Martinez said at a news conference.
“We communicate closely with Manchester City and the conclusion is that Vinny’s response to certain tissue injuries cannot be determined with a scan. We need to wait seven to eight days”.
“The approach is simple. He is a leader and works really hard on the pitch. He deserves to be given every opportunity. After all, it is a World Cup. It is not just any competition”.
In their first match at the World Cup, Belgium face Panama in Group G. Afterwards they will take on Tunisia and England.
